Lighting Energy and Environmental Design Awards

The first annual award specifically recognizing energy and environmental design in lighting were presented last week at the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America's International Illumination Design Awards (IIDA) in Tampa, Fla.

Sponsored by Osram Sylvania, two international companies were awarded the Energy and Environmental Design Award of Excellence. They were:

Daylighting Using the Mirror Duct System from designers Kiyoshi Sakurai, Kouichi Kaihou, Atsushi Matsushita and Masafumi Sekine from Nikken Sekkei Ltd., and designer Hideo Arai from Materialhouse Co., Ltd. The project was completed at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

New Architectural Harmony with Light IGES from designers Ryo Togashi, Takuro Asano and Kaoru Watanabe from Nikken Sekkei Ltd. The project was completed at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES).

A special citation was also awarded to the Taipei Cultural Center for the integration of energy efficiency and architectural lighting design. The designers, Chiming Lin, Yu-Huang Chen and Ai-Ping Wang, are with Originator Lighting Design Consultants, Inc.

"IESNA has a long history of rewarding excellence in lighting design, and the IIDA program is arguably "best in class," noted John Gustafson, executive director of research and development who awarded the winners. "As part of Osram Sylvania's ongoing commitment to energy conservation and environmental responsibility, we are pleased to recognize the first recipients of the 'Energy and Environmental Design Award.' It is our hope that this award will continue to attract worldwide participation from talented designers who can skillfully combine the beautiful and the practical with concern for energy and the environment."

The Energy and Environmental Design Award recognizes quality lighting installations in commercial and industrial buildings that incorporate advanced energy-saving strategies and environmentally responsible solutions into the overall design. National and international members of the IESNA were invited to submit their project for recognition to a panel of judges for sectional, regional and international review and recognition. Awards were given to projects that address design complexity, enjoy unique lighting design, and incorporate energy efficient strategies and key elements of sustainability.
