The most common causes of air-conditioning breakdowns is power surges and electrical disturbances, according to an analysis of insurance claims collected by The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company in Hartford, Conn.

Other top causes include improper electrical connections, lightning and aging insulation. The analysis also noted that external causes account for 49% of air-conditioning service losses, and neglect and improper maintenance cause 39% of losses.

"It's surprising how many people do nothing at all to protect their equipment," said James Brogan, a loss control specialist with Hartford Steam Boiler. "People mistakenly think power surges only affect electronic equipment, but surges can severely damage motors and other components of air-conditioning systems."

Consequently, the report recommends the use of surge-protection devices, grounding equipment and monitoring devices. In addition, end-users should change air-conditioning filters frequently, keep the area around the outdoor compressor free from obstruction and service units regularly.
