Interlock switch delivers Category 4 safety protection

ISO 13849-1 compliance enables use in a wide range of higher risk level applications; compact size allows OEMs to standardize across machine designs.

Omron Scientific Technologies, Inc. introduced the D40Z Safety Interlock Switch. Up to 15 D40Z switches may be combined with the programmable G9SP Safety Controller, enabling these compact IP67-rated units to be used in a variety of high risk multi-door access applications. D40Z non-contact switches support ISO 13849-1 (Safety Category 4/PLe); and because up to 30 units can be connected to a single G9SX-NS Controller while still maintaining category 4/PLe compliance, they are allgedly an ideal safety solution for middle to large scale device applications.

According to Omron, The D40Z is easily mounted from either side of the device with M4 screws. The switch features a two-color diagnostic LED display that provides eight different status indications to simplify troubleshooting, and help keep machines up and running. Additionally, because the 48 mm x 25 mm D40Z is similar in size to Omron STI’s D40A safety category 3 (EN 954-1) safety switch, OEMs can standardize across machine designs, simplifying their bill of materials and speeding machine assembly times in the process.

The D40Z safety interlock switch has a long operating distance of 15mm. This reduces the possibility of nuisance trips due to misalignment or guard door vibration in harsh environments. A non-magnetic actuator ensures that the unit will not attract troublesome metal shavings, reportedly making it an ideal safety interlock solution in metal cutting and forming applications, and other harsh industrial environments.
