HEA hires building enclosure engineer

Amy Gelsone, AIA, LEED APHorizon Engineering Assocs. LLP, a professional engineering firm specializing in commissioning, energy consulting, and LEED services, is pleased to announce its recent hire of Amy Gelsone, AIA, LEED AP, as the first Building Enclosure Engineer for the company. Given the increased demand for these services in response to better understanding of the role of the enclosure on building performance, HEA plans to integrate enclosure systems into its well-established commissioning process to provide clients with increased energy savings, reduced maintenance, and longer lasting investments. Amy’s extensive experience in building enclosure services will play a vital role in the growth of this expanding sector.

Amy specializes in enclosure auditing, commissioning, and consulting services, involving design review, performance criteria development, specification production, submittal review, site observation, issues tracking, failure cause/extent analysis, and remedial design. She also has significant experience working as a LEED Coordinator, helping companies develop approach strategies for pursuing LEED certification. These projects have involved LEED-NC, LEED-CS and LEED-CI rating systems and ranged from Certified to Platinum certification.

With a solid background in architecture, Amy explains why she has transitioned to the field of enclosure commissioning. “In the midst of the disposable mentality still prevalent in today’s society, I am honored to be working with clients and building professionals dedicated to making buildings work and last. I can only appreciate good-looking buildings when they function intelligently. That’s why I’ve chosen commissioning, to help make that happen. That’s why I’ve joined a team committed to the same goal.”

Ms. Gelsone holds a Bachelors of Arts degree from Harvard University where she concentrated in History of Art and Architecture. She furthered her education by attending the University of Houston where she received her Master of Architecture. In addition to her education, Amy is a Registered Architect in the state of Texas, a LEED Accredited Professional, an Energy Manager in Training and a Licensed Field Auditor for the Air Barrier Association of America.
