EU-Mandated Compliance for Hazardous Substances Likely to Affect U.S. Companies

06/19/2006

July 2006 is fast approaching. This is when the European Union (EU) Directive 2002/95/EC, Restrictions of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) becomes law. Many are under the false impression that this restriction of hazardous substances from all new electrical or electronic equipment only affects European Union countries.

In fact, at least 23 U.S. states are considering legislation of this type. California may have a law in place by 2007. Canada, China, Japan and Taiwan are also expected to have RoHS regulations.

The ban includes lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBBs and PBDEs.
