EnergyStar labels commercial dishwashers, ice machines

Commercial foodservice dishwashers and ice machines go green.

09/18/2007

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced specifications for two new commercial foodservice pieces of equipment--dishwashers and ice machines--that will earn the EnergyStar label.

"Energy efficiency is a top priority among restaurant owners and operators," said Bob Meyers, EPA's principal deputy assistant administrator for air and radiation. "We are pleased to deliver more options to save on energy costs and help protect the environment through two new commercial food service products earning the EnergyStar."

More efficient commercial kitchen equipment may save restaurants and foodservice facilities as much as 10% to 30% savings in energy consumption, EPA said. The specifications cover several types of machines in both categories, requiring them to meet maximum energy- and water-efficiency savings. EnergyStar-certified commercial dishwashers will be available Oct. 11, and ice machines on Jan. 1, 2008. During the next five years, these EnergyStar products are expected to save $100 million in reduced energy and water costs.

Other EnergyStar commercial foodservice equipment includes fryers, steam cookers, hot food holding cabinets, and solid door reach-in refrigerators and freezers.
