Emerson Network Power and Sun Microsystems Collaborate to Optimize Data Center Infrastructure

The companies announced a joint development effort that focuses on defining and developing a high-efficiency power and cooling infrastructure for advanced high-performance computing data centers.

Emerson Network Power/Liebert, Columbus, Ohio, announced a joint development effort with Sun Microsystems that focuses on defining and developing a high-efficiency power and cooling infrastructure for advanced high-performance computing (HPC) data centers. This initiative will enable the Sun Blade 6000 and Sun Blade 8000 server platforms to be deployed with zero impact on data center cooling.

A key enabler is aystem. Assessments, which must be scheduled prior to December 31, 2007, will be performed by a local Liebert cooling consultant. 

The two organizations will also collaborate onnments for testing and development of power and cooling technologies with future generations of Sun servers.

Sun blade scalable units are scalable building blocks at the rack level with integrated Sun Blade 6000 server modules, networking, and cabling pre-packaged in a Sun Rack. Sun Blade Scalable Units simplify the configuration of Sun Blade solutions for HPC. Each Sun Blade Scalable Unit is built with server modules containing either AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon CPUs with Sun Solaris pre-installed, and includes InfiniBand fabric and networking.

The Liebert XD system provides high-capacity overhead or rack-adjacent cooling that supplements existing room cooling systems. Using a high-efficiency pumped refrigerant, the Liebert XD system has been tested in operation with Sun servers and can neutralize all of the anticipated heat that would be generated by a rack with four fully configured Sun Blade 6000 Modular Systems.
