ELECTRI'21 COUNCIL Selects Research Projects for Funding in 2006


Six research project proposals relating to the electrical industry have been awarded funding by the ELECTRI'21 COUNCIL of the Electrical Contracting Foundation from its 2006 research budget of $650,000. The six projects were selected from 75 original summary proposals submitted by researchers from around the U.S.

The projects cover a variety of topics including worker’s compensation and new markets and growth opportunities in the industry. The winning proposals include:

  • We Built This City:An Investigation of Factors Impacting Growth or Decline of Union Market Share in Large Cities. Researchers will investigate the trend of the electrical market in the 15 largest cities in the U.S. to identify potential factors that have caused growth or decline in union market share. Principal Investigator: Perry Daneshgari, president, MCA, Inc., and adjunct professor of management and engineering, University of Michigan-Flint.


  • The Progress of Wind Generation Systems in the USA. Electrical contractors will be able to capitalize on the high-growth wind-power market with this study of current information and resources for wind-generation system advances. Principal Investigator: Clark B. Pace, program undergraduate coordinator and assistant professor, Dept. of Construction Management, University of Washington.


  • Cooperatively Negotiated Workers Compensation-Making NECA Chapters a Player, Phase II. This project is the second phase of a multiemployer study examining workers compensation systems in all states, including six that have innovative alternative worker's compensation systems. Principal Investigator:R. Edward Minchin, Jr., Dept. of Civil Engineering, University of Florida.


  • Emergence of the IBS Contractor. The study will investigate the future market for Integrated Building Systems (IBS) contractors and identify ways electrical contractors can transition into the role of IBS contractor.Principal Investigator: Thomas E. Glavinich, D.E., P.E., associate chair and associate professor, Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering Dept., University of Kansas.


  • Impact of Seismic Requirements in the International Building Code on Electrical Installations. The purpose of this project is to investigate the impact of newly adopted seismic requirements in the International Building Code (IBC) on electrical installations. The project will develop best practices of seismic bracing of electrical equipment in terms of design, installation, inspection and other related subjects, as well as identifying problematic areas of current practice, such as the gaps between the IBC and the National Electrical Code (NEC).Principal Investigator: Yimin Zhu, Ph.D., assistant professor, Construction Management, Florida International University.


  • An Integrated Information System for Electrical Contractors. The goal of this project is to better understand the requirements and the value of an integrated system for electrical contractors and their business so that software developers can produce totally integrated systems that will make electrical contractors more efficient and more profitable. Principal Investigator:Yimin Zhu, Ph.D.
