DOE Releases Guidelines for Energy-Efficient School Design

To assist the nation’s schools with saving energy and money, the U.S. Dept. of Energy has released a series of publications offering design guidelines for energy-efficient schools.

To assist the nation’s schools with saving energy and money, the U.S. Dept. of Energy has released a series of publications offering design guidelines for energy-efficient schools.

“Our nation’s schools spend more than $6 billion on energy costs per year,” said Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham. “With these guidelines, schools can lower their energy bills by 25%.”

Among the DOE selections are Energy Design Guidelines for High Performance Schools , which takes into account regional climates, and National Best Practices Manual for High Performance Schools , a publication which includes architectural and engineering specifications.

“These books provide information that school districts have been requesting,” said Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy David Garmen. “The guidelines also address health and safety issues and will help school districts improve the learning environment for less cost. These guidelines will enhance the energy efficiency and indoor environment of other buildings as well.”
