DOE Promotes Power Plant Improvements

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), through its Power Plant Improvement Initiative, is looking to shell out $95 million worth of funding to projects that have the potential to improve coal-fired power plants and ultimately, the nation's electrical infrastructure.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), through its Power Plant Improvement Initiative, is looking to shell out $95 million worth of funding to projects that have the potential to improve coal-fired power plants and ultimately, the nation's electrical infrastructure.

"This initiative is another step in an effort to bring increased efficiency and new technologies to coal-burning plants," said U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham. "It also represents an area that is certain to be part of a balanced and comprehensive national energy policy to help us meet the energy demands and needs of the country well into the future."

With coal-based power plants supplying 55 percent of the nation's electricity, this federal initiative encourages the development of new technologies to improve the efficiency, reliability and environmental performance of these plants.

The DOE is looking to award its grant monies as soon as late summer in order to expedite these projects.
