DOE Database Logs 100th Sustainable Building Entry


A U.S. Dept. of Energy green building database has reached a milestone.

The High-Performance Buildings Case Studies database, developed and maintained by BuildingGreen, Inc. for DOE, recently gained its 100thcase study—the Traugott Terrace housing project in Seattle.

The idea behind the database is to collect and present easy-to-use information about green buildings. Because DOE’s primary focus is energy, much of the information in the database revolves around projects’ energy performance. But the database also displays information on other environmental features such as water use, materials and indoor environmental quality, as well as costs, design and construction process issues and lessons learned from the projects.

Several organizations, such as the U.S. Green Building Council and the Federal Energy Management Program, use the database as a resource. There are currently 34 LEED-certified projects and 20 federally owned buildings in the database. Additionally, the American Institute of Architects Committee on the Environment uses the database for its annual Top Ten Green Projects competition.

“Our idea with the HPB database was to create a common platform for the display of energy and environmental performance metrics that could be used by other organizations and agencies in addition to DOE,” said BuildingGreen project manager Nadav Malin.
