Design Competition for a Sustainable New Orleans


Global Green USA , a national environmental organization headquartered in Santa Monica, Calif., is inviting architects, urban planners, designers, ecologists and students to put forward a creative yet practical vision of sustainable design for New Orleans. Designs will combine multiple goals of reduced energy use, healthier indoor air quality and affordability while serving as a catalyst for the green rebuilding of New Orleans.

The jury is anchored by leading names in the architectural design and planning community—Thom Mayne, William Morrish, Walter Hood—New Orleans community leaders and others who are passionate about green building and intelligent architecture. Other jury members will be announced soon. The technical jury will include experts from the U.S. Green Building Council, AIA and Global Green USA.

Among other important references, competitors are encouraged to draw upon the U.S. Green Building Council’s New Orleans Principles, a set of principles and policy recommendations for embedding sustainable strategies in Gulf Coast rebuilding. The Principles were developed by national and regional experts in planning and design during the Gulf Coast Reconstruction charrettes held at USGBC’s 2005 Greenbuild Conference in conjunction with Global Green USA, Enterprise, the Trust for Public Land, Habitat for Humanity, and the Congress for the New Urbanism.
