Clothing retailer L.L. Bean has been given U.S. Green Building Council LEED certification for their Freeport, Maine-based data center . The building also met ASHRAE criteria.

Awarded the LEED Silver certification , the 18,000 sq ft data center is equipped to hold up to 144 racks of servers, with 4.2 kW of power for every rack. It also created energy efficiency by recycling half of its construction waste and by using materials sourced in New England.
Earlier in June, the USGBC stated it was working on a plan to monitor data centers . The current LEED certification process can evaluate the centers, but there are no unique guidelines for those types of buildings.
