Collaborate, integrate on lighting design

A panel discussion at LightFair International encouraged lighting designers to collaborate, educate, and integrate for the best possible outcome.

According to a panel discussion held June 4, 2014, at LightFair International, the lighting designer should act as the connective tissue in a successful lighting design. Presenters included:

  • David Lewis, LTL Architects

  • Derek Porter, Derek Porter Studio

  • Josh Shelton, El Dorado Inc.

  • Nelson Jenkins, Lumen Architecture.

Key ideas presented to the audience:

  • The role of the lighting designer is closely aligned with the architect.

  • Lighting controls should be designed and outlined early in the process.

  • To be successful, know the constraints of the project: solar orientation, siting, budget, etc.

  • A mock-up created in advance will prove the design will work, and simplify the design process, assembly, and integration.

  • Sort through the mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and fire protection documents meticulously before the authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) inspection.
