"Owners are making changes that are revolutionizing the construction process," states a summary of the latest annual owner survey conducted by management consulting firm FMI and the Construction Management Assn. of America.

Results of the sixth annual survey were presented at the CMAA National Conference in Huntington Beach, Calif. in September and found:

  • 66% use design-bid-build most often, but only 23% think this construction method offers the best value.

  • Between 40% and 50% of all construction projects are running behind schedule, and many feel that the blame lies in inefficiencies built into the way projects are managed.

  • The commissioning process runs longer than planned 47% of the time, partially due to the fact that many respondents said they don't have a formal commissioning requirement.

  • Only 37% of owners use standard contract documents provided by the AIA or other groups, while the majority uses their own modified or proprietary contracts.
