ARI Announces Recipients of Inaugural Standards Achievement Award

The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute announced the recipients of ARI’s inaugural Standards Achievement Award. Presentation of the award occurred on April 24, 2007, during ARI’s Spring Product Section meetings held in Reston, Va.


The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI), Arlington, Va.,stry relations at Carrier Corp., Syracuse, N.Y., are the recipients of ARI’s inaugural Standards Achievement Award. Presentation of the award occurred on April 24, 2007, during ARI’s Spring Product Section meetings held in Reston, Va.

In inaugurating this new award, ARI’s General Standards Committee sought to recognize recipients for their exceptional volunteer service and technical guidance in leading the development of industry standards.

Larry Howington , who currently serves as chairman of the CRMD Engineering Committee, was recognized for guiding ARI’s Commercial Refrigeration Manufacturers Division (CRMD) Engineering Committee through important milestones in the development of ARI Standard 1200, Performance Rating of Commercial Refrigerated Display Merchandisers and Storage Cabinets . The standard has achieved ANSI approval and acceptance by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as the basis for federal regulation.

Gary Kaiser , immediate past chairman of ARI’s General Standard Committee (GSC), received the award for his leadership in maintaining the accuracy, completeness and quality of ARI standards. His successful leadership can be contributed to his ability to instill confidence in the standard development process by inviting member participation to assure all aspects of standards are considered.

Gerald Peck received the award for leading the development of the first known U.S.-Canadian standard and the first harmonized standard published under provisions of the original U.S.%%MDASSML%%Canadian Free Trade Agreement. Before harmonization of that standard (UL1995/CSA 236 on Heating and Cooling Equipment ), manufacturers had to comply with 12 different national electro-technical standards. His efforts led to the closest and most extensive relationship between listing agencies in the world. Since that time, he has overseen tri-national standard harmonization efforts under the North American Free Trade Agreement. His latest efforts will make U.S. manufacturers more globally competitive by reducing the complexity of listing and approval procedures worldwide.

Bill Walter, a member of ARI’s General Standards Committee and chair of ARI’s Code Interaction Subcommittee, received the award for his dedication a s an international leader in the advancement of industry standards that have benefited the industry and consumers alike. He has dedicated countless hours to harmonizing standards at the international level to avoid confusion and to ease implementation. He has dedicated his time and expertise to 20 ASHRAE committees, and is the convener of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) working group on Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerants and a past convener of the ISO working group on Reuse of Refrigerants. In addition, he is also a member of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group for the committee on Electrical Safety for Home Appliances in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
