Apple selects N.C. for new $1 billion data center

Apple has chosen Maiden, N.C., as the site of its new data center, which will store information for the iPhone and iTunes.

To supply the applications for its iPhone and music for iTunes, Apple has announced plans to open a new data center in Maiden, N.C., that is expected to cost around $1 billion.

The data center, which is expected to take up 500,000 sq ft, will have approximately 50 full-time employees. Ground breaking is scheduled for August, with the first center employees beginning work toward the end of 2010. The Maiden facility will be the first East coast location for Apple, which is based in Cupertino, Calif.
