ANSI/ASHRAE standard to increase air speed

In an attempt to lower building costs, ANSI and ASHRAE have agreed to a standard that would allow buildings to increase fan speed.


The committee in charge of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55, Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy , has voted to allow an increase in air speed as an option for cooling building interiors. Doing this grants increased flexibility to building designers and engineers in an effort to make a structure more environmentally friendly by reducing air conditioning costs .

Standard 55 impacts both building mechanical codes and criteria for the U.S. Green Building Council LEED program. The standards determine the temperature range as well as other thermal environmental conditions used to satisfy building occupants.
According to Building Design + Construction, the result of these changes will lead to increased air movement, as ceiling fans or operable windows can be used to reduce the need (and/or the running time) for energy intensive cooling system,
