2018 40 Under 40: Russell Carr, PE, CEng; 38

05/13/2018

Associate, Arup, San Francisco

MS electrical engineering, University of Leeds, United Kingdom

Russell Carr, PE, CEng; 38Carr is an associate at Arup in San Francisco and a chartered electrical engineer with 13 years of experience. He specializes in the policy, planning, entitlement, and procurement of renewable energy, microgrids, and energy-storage systems as integral elements to urban infrastructure, along with the design and construction of data centers and industrial electrical distribution systems. He has extensive working history with the city of San Francisco, PG&E, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), and Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) National Laboratory. His most recent work includes the SolarResilient project for San Francisco, under funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and in cooperation with city departments. Carr has given many evening lectures and presentations on how solar and storage can be used in times of disaster to provide electricity to those who need it. He also has provided extensive community outreach to assist San Francisco communities in disaster preparedness. By attending community meetings, he has been able to better understand the electrical loads people really need to use during an emergency and apply that information to related projects. Carr volunteers his time to speak to members of the architecture professional’s network on basic electrical systems. As a proponent of tackling climate change, he commutes to work via bicycle every day, not only reducing his impact on the environment and freeing up congestion, but also using the time to relax and eliminate the stress of a working day before arriving at home. Carr has engaged in several new hobbies in the past 5 years. He has season passes to snowboard in the Tahoe mountains, goes surfing at Pacifica State Beach, and has taken up golf, which he typically does with work colleagues over the weekend.
