2018 40 Under 40: Kevin Sandrella, PE, LEED AP; 35

Project Manager, Electrical Engineer, CMTA, Prospect, Ky.

BS electrical engineering, University of Louisville, Kentucky

Kevin Sandrella, PE, LEED AP; 35Sandrella joined CMTA as an intern in 2005 and became a full-time employee in 2009. He has managed a variety of projects for CMTA in 38 states and Canada including education, health care, data centers, and specialized medical equipment installations. His design expertise focuses on medium- and low-voltage power systems including emergency backup, load-shedding, and paralleling systems; communications systems; fire alarm systems; energy-efficient lighting; power monitoring and metering; daylighting; and lighting controls systems. In 2010, Sandrella was the project manager and engineer for the new 79-bed Clark Regional Medical Center, an acute care hospital campus in Winchester, Ky. The project took a radical approach to hospital HVAC design, using distributed heat pumps and geothermal wells for 100% of the building’s HVAC needs. This was the first fully geothermal hospital in Kentucky and it continues to perform as one of the most energy-efficient hospitals in the country. When he is not working, engaging with his family, or serving the community, Sandrella spends time on home projects or one of his many hobbies. He has a proclivity for building just about anything and recently installed a 10-kW solar array on his home. He’s hoping to be net zero this year. His other hobbies include designing, building, and flying remote-control airplanes and doing anything that involves the outdoors. He’s been an avid duck hunter since 2010, a deer and turkey hunter since 2016, and a dedicated fisherman his whole life. Sandrella is a member of the U.S. Parachute Organization and has been a licensed skydiver since 2008. Since that time, he has made more than 200 skydives. He also is an amateur fireworks enthusiast. He orchestrates a large display every year for his family reunion on the 4th of July.
