After earning his BS in engineering in 2003, Mathers worked as a consulting environmental engineer assisting large municipal and private landfills with environmental regulatory compliance. He left his native Richmond, Va., in 2005 to advance his academic and engineering training at San Diego State University while working part time as a facilities engineer. Mathers joined San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc. in 2008 as a mechanical engineer and soon became manager of the mechanical engineering team at the company's Real Estate and Facilities Division. He and his team were responsible for planning, design, construction, performance, and optimization of mechanical, plumbing, and control systems for 11 million sq. ft. of Qualcomm facilities domestically and internationally. These spaces included research labs, data centers, manufacturing, health care, office, auditorium, and assembly areas. Mathers has just accepted a position at the consulting engineering firm exp as a senior mechanical engineer and project manager. As a member of ASHRAE, he assists with the local young engineers in ASHRAE by teaching and reaching out to potential future professional engineers. Mathers has a long track record of community service, such as managing blood drives and environmental cleanups as well as assisting with Native American reservation rebuilding projects, food drives through Feeding America, camp counseling, and Adopt-a-Highway cleanups. He is also active with health-related fundraising campaigns supporting heart, stroke, and multiple sclerosis. Mathers puts his engineering training to use at home through woodworking. He has built many spouse-approved furniture pieces including a dining room table, a shoe cabinet, a treasure chest, and a guest bed. He also enjoys playing soccer and the guitar.
