Baker incorporates real-world experience and shares stories from her projects to enhance the classes she teaches in the department of civil, construction, and environmental engineering at Iowa State University (ISU). She joined ISU in 2007 as a lecturer, and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2014. She developed a university course titled "Electrical Systems for Buildings," the content of which she bases on a combination of the National Electrical Code and her industry experience. In addition to teaching, Baker has been an independent consultant since 2012, specializing in USGBC LEED project coordination. Prior to ISU, Baker worked at Farris Engineering in Des Moines, Iowa, where she designed and specified lighting, power distribution, and fire alarm systems for various building types. Before that, she worked at KJWW Engineering Consultants in Des Moines where she designed building electrical systems for many types of commercial buildings. Outside the classroom, Baker volunteers with the ISU Program for Women in Science and Engineering by giving lectures and presentations at conferences and participating in panel discussions. She also serves as a co-advisor for the National Electrical Contractors Association student chapter. Baker enjoys spending time with her family-her husband Rob and their three children. She also loves baking treats for her family, and occasionally bakes for her students and coworkers. She learned baking from her mom, who was a home economics teacher. Judging from her academic success, Baker learned more than just baking from her mother.
