RTM Engineering Consultants provided mechanical and electrical engineering for the renovation and expansion of the Aspirus Medford Health Center in Medford, Wis. The 55,000 sq ft of space was renovated to accommodate a family center, visiting specialist and urgent care, cardiopulmonary and sleep lab, emergency department, oncology, and registration.

RTM worked with Eppstein Uhen Architects, and both teams were tasked with understanding the organization’s current operations to ensure that the proposed improvements were in the best interest of the facility and patients. RTM worked hand-in-hand with facility staff members throughout the project, ensuring that they were aligned with a basis of design prior to commencing work.

Since the project consisted of a number of spaces, it became integral to coordinate construction with the facility’s staff to eliminate any disruption to hospital operations or reduction in patient satisfaction. Implementation logistics were fully integrated into the planning process, which provided a comprehensive blueprint for decision making and project prioritization.

Taking into consideration the green guide for health care, RTM’s design emphasized operational efficiency and sustainability featuring LED lighting, reduced lighting power density, and automatic lighting controls. To improve coordination among the design and construction teams, engineers used software programs including Revit, NavisWorks, and Visual Lighting, resulting in a streamlined process from concept to completion.

By employing an engineering strategy focused on increasing operational efficiency, the project achieved cost savings along with a reliable and sustainable design.
