Engineering challenges and solutions:
Covanta relocated its Corporate Headquarters and primary Data Center to a new Class A commercial office building. Construction involved a retrofit of existing shell space. The project was completed in April, 2011. Project construction was from July, 2010 to March, 2011. Overall engineering design took place from October, 2009 er, 2009 to June, 2010.
Covanta’s architectural program was one that required high ceiling elevations. Therefore, one of the significant engineering challenges was to coordinate all of the above ceiling related engineering infrastructure with the structural steel elevations for the building. Another challenge of this project was the retrofit of existing base building infrastructure with new infrastructure that satisfied the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED-CI certification requirements. Some of the existing infrastructure was in good condition, but required modifications in order to meet the stringent requirements of the LEED-CI certification program.
Solutions for Challenges
Faced In order to provide the Client with the highest ceiling elevation possible, Rock Brook modeled the space in REVIT in order to coordinate the depth of ductwork, lighting fixtures, etc. with the finished ceiling. This allowed our team to coordinate the MEP/FP systems and equipment above the ceiling in order to provide optimum system performance while providing to the Client a space that is an example of fine architecture and workflow. Cost-effective system modifications were designed to upgrade equipment to meet LEED-CI certification requirements.
The intent of this project was to obtain a LEED-CI Gold level certification under the USGBC’s LEED certification program. To meet this goal, the project required an intelligent evaluation of existing engineering infrastructure and systems. Various systems were strategically upgraded to meet LEED requirements without requiring the Client to invest substantial capital for the complete replacement of major systems. These included mechanical systems, plumbing fixture replacement, new state-of-the-art energy efficient lighting and controls as well as increased ventilation and monitoring of system performance.
