For more than three decades, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has been a leading voice for environmental advocacy in the US. When the group decided to open a regional office in Santa Monica, California, they knew it had to be environmentally friendly. The building, named for Robert Redford, actor and long-time environmentalist, would combine cutting-edge technologies and materials with energy-efficient architecture to create a showcase for green-building design and promote environmental activism. The building, extensively remodeled by the NRDC and opened in November 2003, pushes the envelope for environmental design and construction techniques.
Creating and maintaining comfort conditioning in hospitals has long been the design goal and an operational requirement of HVAC systems, not only for patients and health-care providers, but also for equipment such as telephone rooms and computer rooms. Lately, it is becoming even more of a challenge. Most central air systems operate 24 hours per day, seven days per week to provide comfort conditioning and minimum air change rates as required by code. But the increasing use and need for digital communications, computerized patient records, digital radiology imaging and storage systems are creating an increasing need for year-round cooling in hospitals and related health-care facilities. Many new types of equipment are creating larger cooling loads: digital radiographic equipment such as computed tomography (CT) scan equipment and heat exchanger; cardiac cath lab and EP lab computer equipment, magnetic resonance imaging equipment, computer rooms themselves; and uninterruptible power supplies.
Mesa Public School District #4 is the largest school district in the state of Arizona. It boasts over 70,000 students in over 100 campuses scattered over 200 square miles. Because of rapid growth, Mesa Schools, like many other districts across the nation, were forced to utilize modular classrooms for two reasons.
Penn State’s Department of Architectural Engineering has installed the first Internet-controllable lighting laboratory in the world, based on the digital addressable lighting interface (DALI). The DALI interface allows users from any PC and any location to control any lamp in this laboratory with a web browser; observe the effects with a web camera; and remotely monitor energy use and time-of-day use. Most recently, the control system was on display at Lightfair 2004 in Las Vegas.
The Speedway Club is a nine-story tower in a famous racing setting. It is located outside the first turn of the 1.5-mile main track at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. Both the Speedway and The Speedway Club are recognized as among the most modern in the world, and both are busy almost every day of the year. The Speedway hosted its inaugural NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series races in April 1997 and its first Indy Racing League and NASCAR Craftsman Truck events that June.
Chicago is the birthplace of the high-rise building and has been a world leader in building safety after the great Chicago fire in 1871. We applaud Mayor Daley, the City Council and the High Rise Building Safety Committee chaired by Alderman Bernard Stone for facilitating public discussion about fire and life safety in Chicago’s buildings. During recent testimony at the City Council, we were saddened to hear from senior citizens as well as building owners and managers that might have to move elsewhere or shutter buildings due to the expense of the high-rise building sprinkler mandate. We, like this committee, believe Chicagoans should be protected from fire and smoke in buildings. However, we need to keep the economics of living and employing in Chicago affordable.
HVAC experts should know something about radiation and it’s control for a variety of reasons. First, planning and designing effluent systems for laboratories and other industrial facilities requires some knowledge of this hazard and how it is used. Secondly, maintenance and repair of these systems will require some near contact with potentially contaminated components such as fume hoods, blowers, flow dampers and ductwork.

Even the stadium itself, until recently a crumbling Greek temple with peeling plaster and questionable plumbing, has been part of the team’s mystique for more than 30 years. In such a franchise, change does not come easy.
Controlling humidity in commercial buildings used to be a difficult undertaking that was best accomplished by overcooling the supply air to increase moisture removal, then reheating the overcooled air to the desired temperature. This was a huge waste of energy. While gas desiccant systems were a viable alternative, they were relatively costly and more often used for industrial applications where very low humidity levels were required.
