Engineering challenges and solutions:

Alfa Tech completed MEP design for the new 140,000 SF Christopher High School which has achieved Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) status. The campus includes classrooms, a cafeteria, and a gym. Phase I of this project also recently received the Award of Excellence at the 2011 Leroy F. Greene Design and Planning Awards. Engineering challenges included meeting the client’s requirement for achieving CHPS status, which necessitated a design for Phase 2 that matched that of the Phase 1 as close as possible.

As part of their services for the campus in Phase 1, Alfa Tech provided a design for the science classrooms, specifically, that included infrastructure that would allow the expansion of the classrooms to serve more students with the least amount of changes in the design for Phase 2, all while meeting the design schedule. Alfa Tech also provided a design that addressed daylighting concerns with window shading, as the project is located in a very unprotected area. Another challenge was coordination between designs for all of the buildings, which are connected by a “bridge.”

Each MEP design was provided with other disciplines’ designs in mind, and how they would work together. And finally, the mechanical systems for the project were designed to be housed on the roof by a mechanical well, which also matches the unique aesthetic of the school’s design, with its sloping roof and curved buildings.
