Weekly merger, acquisition, deal update: July 27
The pace of industry consolidation has picked up dramatically over the summer. This week Morrissey Goodale tracked six domestic and four international transactions. This brings the total year-to-date deal count in the United States to 104, up 7% over the 97 domestic deals tracked through the same period in 2011. Including the U.S., the total global deal count is now 193, down a marginal 2% from the 196 global deals tracked through the same period last year.

Multi-discipline engineering and planning consultancy Calvin, Giordano & Associates (CGA) (Fort Lauderdale, FL) announced that its affiliate company Calvin, Giordano Coastal Group acquired East Bay Group (North Palm Beach, FL), an engineering, environmental and operations management services firm with a special expertise in coastal engineering and infrastructure, water resources management, renewable energy and resort development. International multi-discipline engineering, architecture, planning and project management consultancyDar Group (Cairo, Egypt) acquired Currie & Brown (London, United Kingdom), a 600-person leading international asset management and construction consultancy providing a range of construction management specialist skills, including asset management, building surveying, quantity surveying and cost management, PFI/PPP advisory services, project management and due diligence. Dar Group will retain the Currie & Brown brand, as it has done with other consultancies it has acquired. Dar Group was established in 1985 by Dar Al-Handasah, employs nearly 13,000, and features several leading design and engineering consultancies in its portfolio, including Perkins+Will (Chicago, IL), T.Y. Lin International (San Francisco, CA), Landrum & Brown (Cincinnati, OH) and Ross & Baruzzini (St. Louis, MO). Link to details

Engineering, construction services, planning and design firm Dessau (Laval, Quebec, Canada) acquired Sendex Environmental (London, Ontario, Canada), a geoenvironmental engineering firm specializing in environmental site assessments, site remediation, and auditing and regulatory compliance. Sendex will be an integral part of Dessau’s largest subsidiary, LVM, with more than 1,500 employees working in the geotechnical, materials and environmental engineering fields. Link to details

Food and pharmaceutical products testing and environmental laboratory services company Eurofins Scientific (Brussels, Belgium) signed a definitive agreement to purchase MWH Laboratories(Monrovia, CA) from leading international water and wastewater treatment, environmental engineering and construction services firm MWH Global (Broomfield, CO). MWH Laboratories is one of the largest water quality laboratory operations in the United States, providing technical services from its 34,000 square-foot-facility in Monrovia, California and employing more than 100 professionals. The sale of MWH Laboratories is expected to leverage Eurofins global footprint, while complementing its testing services, capabilities and expertise for customers worldwide. Following regulatory review and approval, MWH Laboratories will become Eurofins Eaton Analytical, named for Dr. Andrew Eaton, a 32-year veteran at MWH Laboratories, in honor of his industry leadership in water quality analysis and testing. Global multi-discipline engineering firm SNC-Lavalin (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) announced thatSNC-Lavalin Fayez Engineering (SLFE) (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia), an engineering consultancy joint venture between SNC-Lavalin and local partners, acquired the industrial division of Saudi Arabian engineering consulting and construction services firm Zuhair Fayez Partnership (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia). SLFE was established in response to Saudi Aramco’s General Engineering Services Plus (GES+) initiative, which aims to develop engineering capabilities in the Kingdom. Under the GES+ initiative, SLFE will be invited to bid on front-end engineering and select detailed engineering services contracts to support the implementation of Saudi Aramco’s capital program. Projects will include both on- and offshore oil and gas production and processing facilities, infrastructure projects, as well as refining and petrochemical facilities. Link to details

Civil engineering, environmental, architecture and planning firm MSA Professional Services(Baraboo, WI) merged with BDM Consulting Engineers and Surveyors (BDM) (St. Paul, Minnesota), a multi-discipline engineering firm focused on providing municipal engineering services with a strong emphasis placed on wastewater treatment, water treatment and water resource engineering. Moving forward, BDM will operate as BDM, A Division of MSA Professional Services. Link to details

Urban design, landscape architecture and planning firm MSI Design (Columbus, OH) merged with landscape architecture and planning firm Kinzelman Kline Gossman (KKG) (Columbus, OH) and will do business as MKSK moving forward. The merger brings together two firms with more than 60 professionals and a portfolio of over 400 projects in the states of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Florida, California and various other global locations. In a noteworthy initiative (though not considered a deal for the purposes of this update), multi-discipline consulting engineering firm R.V. Anderson Associates (RVA) (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) formed a joint venture with water, wastewater, sanitation and solid waste consultancy Original Engineering Consultants (Tokyo, Japan) and environmental engineering and urban infrastructure development services firm PHE Consultants (Mumbai, India). The joint venture seeks to identify, develop and pursue water and wastewater engineering assignments in India funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Link to details
