Wall Street Journal Award Honors Fiber-optic Fixture

Fiberstars, Inc., a provider of fiber-optic lighting, was recently the recipient of a 2006 Wall Street Journal Innovation Award in Energy and Power.

The awards are conferred annually by the editors of the Wall Street Journal .In 2006, the editors screened more than 600 initial applications, considering only 121 for the awards.

Of those, 12 category winners and 37 runners-up were selected.Companies were judged by whether an innovation represents a breakthrough from conventional ideas or methods in its field and whether the innovation goes beyond incremental improvements of technologies that already exist, among other criteria.

Fiberstars’s EFO (Efficient Fiber Optic) line of lighting fixtures has been developed to reduce energy usage across a variety of lighting applications and the company claims that it uses as little as 20% of the energy of traditional lighting systems.

Fiberstars EFO technology, protected by more than 40 patents, employs large-core fiber optic cable to deliver light to up to eight individual endpoints from a single metal-halide light source. The light is UV free and radiates no heat, and its lamp life is typically four to six times that of halogen or incandescent bulbs, thus reducing maintenance and replacement costs above and beyond the energy savings.
