Vanderweil Engineers names managing principal

John A. Sporidis, PE, joins the Alexandria, Va., office of Vanderweil Engineers. The engineering principal has more than 35 years of experience and will oversee a diverse range of public- and private-sector projects.

Vanderweil Engineers announced that John A. Sporidis, PE, an engineering principal with more than 35 years in professional practice, has joined the Alexandria, Va., office. He will serve as managing principal, overseeing a diverse range of public- and private-sector projects for the firm.

Sporidis most recently served as a principal with the Washington, D.C., office of Arup, and previously was a senior vice president and managing director of the Syska Hennessy Group in the metropolitan Washington area. He has managed projects throughout the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East. His experience has included projects for the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Department of State, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Department of Defense. Key projects in his portfolio have included the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office headquarters in Alexandria, which earned a GSA Design Award; the GSA national headquarters modernization; and the U.S. Department of Agriculture headquarters modernization.

Sporidis holds a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the George Washington University. He is active with the Society of American Military Engineers, where he is a past member of the Industry Affairs Committee; and the American Council of Engineering Companies, where he is a past member of the International Engineering Committee and a long-standing member of the Federal Agencies and Procurement Advocacy Committee.

Sporidis was a founding member of the HVAC Advocacy Program of the GSA. He is a past chairman of the ACE Mentor Program of the Metropolitan Washington Area and the recipient of George Washington University’s Engineering Alumnus of the Year award.
