UPS Systems Recalled

American Power Conversion (APC) has announced a worldwide voluntary recall of two models of its “Back-UPS CS” line of uninterruptible power-supply (UPS) systems. The manufacturer said that units can overheat, posing potential fire hazards.

Approximately 2.1 million units are affected worldwide, with about 900,000 units in the United States, alone.

The two models being recalled are the Back-UPS CS 350 and the Back-UPS CS 500, in both 120-volt and 230-volt models. APC has received eight reports — six in the United States — of units overheating, causing outer casings to melt. Though no injuries have been reported, three of the incidents resulted in minor property damage.

Consumers should check model markings and serial numbers to identify affected units. Model markings are located on the front of the units and serial numbers are printed on the bottom of the units. Units involved have serial numbers that begin with six alphanumeric characters in the following ranges:

 AB0048 through AB0251

 BB0104 through BB0251

 JB0125 through JB0251

Units with serial numbers ending in an “R” are not affected. Users whose systems bear affected serial numbers should immediately remove the units from service by first turning off all connecting equipment, turning off the UPS system itself and disconnecting the unit from the electrical outlet.
