Even though Underwriters Laboratories has been testing gas-fired products for many years, the testing organization has only recently decided to upgrade its gas-fired classification mark to a listing mark. This means that products earning this new listing mark have been evaluated not only for electrical safety, but for gas safety as well.

The new listing mark was established in response to a notable increase—35% from 1992 to 2000—in gas-fired equipment shipments, including water heaters, furnaces and boilers.
