Sustainability is just as important for the environment as it is for businesses. Green building strategies can benefit owners in myriad ways including lower operational costs, such as utilities and maintenance, and a potential increase in property value. RTM helps businesses understand sustainability requirements and navigate the challenges to obtaining program certifications.

In the final of a three-part series, RTM examines two certification programs that recognize buildings that meet high-sustainability standards.

1. Leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED) and green globes

These two certification programs reward buildings that adhere to standards for energy and resource usage, water efficiency, innovation, and other sustainability measures. Points are awarded for meeting these criteria, and a rating is given based on the number of points accrued.

RTM can help owners and tenants, whether in new or older buildings, determine which of the two programs is most appropriate. In meeting the energy efficiency goals of these programs, businesses gain worldwide recognition and may be eligible for tax credits and incentives.

2. Energy Star

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency established this program in 1992 to reward buildings for employing energy-efficient technology and strategies. New and existing buildings can earn certification by scoring at least 75 on a scale of 1 to 100, as rated by a licensed professional.

RTM provides energy-management assistance to meet Energy Star criteria including identifying and implementing improvements to building systems, such as HVAC and lighting. Businesses leasing to federal tenants must possess Energy Star-certified spaces.
