Schneider to light up Times Square

Schneider Electric’s Square D Powerlink 3000 level, Web-enabled lighting control system was installed to control the new, Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball. Descending at 11:59 PM EST Dec. 31, the control system will provide power to the LED power supplies used in each segment of the ball. Fed from 13 two-pole, 30A circuit breakers, the power supplies are controllable from several floors below the roof of 1 Times Square, over a video DMX network.

Unveiled Nov. 11, 2008, the 12-ft, geodesic sphere, which is the double the size previous New Year’s Eve balls, weighs 11,875 lbs. The ball is covered in 2,668 Waterford Crystals and powered by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs. The New Year’s Even Ball will now be capable to create a palete of more than 16 million vibrant colors and billions of patterns atop 1 Times Square. Displayed year-round, the ball will display advertisements periodically.
