By Staff December 1, 2005

A new factory-acceptance testing lab is designed to provide performance testing for power systems serving server rooms and large-scale data centers. The facility was developed at American Power Conversion ‘s headquarters in West Kingston, R. I. It is intended for the company’s own customers, as well as for consulting engineers and contractors involved in specifying and building large power systems and protection schemes that include multiple, parallel UPS systems.

Evaluation capabilities include system efficiency testing, steady-state load and step-load testing, input frequency and voltage variation, utility failure, battery performance and system input and output faults.

The lab is intended to complement the company’s thermal test lab in Kolding, Denmark , and includes a 3.3-MVA electrical service input, 2-MW generator capability, 1-MVA variable transformer, a 3.2-MVA resistive/reactive load bank and dedicated test-bay switchgear. Testing and measurement equipment conforms to the requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology .
