National Lab Study Argues Convincingly for Commercial Building Commissioning
A new study from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) should be welcome reinforcement in the battle to convince clients of the benefits of building commissioning.
The study brings together and standardizes commissioning data from 224 commercial buildings—concluding that commissioning can indeed save costs on a wide range of new and existing building types.
Among other findings, the U.S. Dept of Energy-funded study found that commissioning existing buildings achieved a median energy cost savings of 15%, with payback periods of 0.7 years. The median payback time for new buildings was 4.8 years, and when non-energy impacts were factored in, those payback periods were considerably reduced, often to zero.
The study suggests that commissioning of commercial buildings could save the nation over $18 billion a year in energy costs alone.
