RTKL Assocs., Chicago, promoted Peter O’Connor, RCDD , to principal. Based in the firm’s Chicago office, O’Connor leads the healthcare practice of RTKL’s Special Systems Design Group. In his new position, O’Connor will lead the practice focused on designing technology infrastructures for the healthcare marketplace. O’Connor has 17 years of experience with hospital communication systems and is currently designing the technology infrastructure for a 1.2 million sq. ft patient care pavilion at the University of Chicago Hospital. In addition, RTKL received the design contract for the 500,000 sq. ft expansion to the National Art Museum of China. The competition for the project began in 2005 and received more than 100 submissions from design firms.

Harley Ellis Devereaux , Chicago, is celebrating its 100thanniversary this year. In recognition of the centennial, Harley Ellis Devereaux launched a retrospective Web site that looks at 100 years of engineering achievements in the fields of healthcare, K-12 schools, science and research, industrial and automotive, and higher education.

Denise van den Bossche, LEED AP, joined SSRCx , Phoenix, a subsidiary of Smith Seckman Reid, as director of LEED facilitation sales for the southwest region of the United States. Van den Bossche has more than 20 years of business development experience in the commercial construction sector, with a focus on sustainable building methodologies and green building commissioning. Jamie Qualk, LEED AP , director of LEED facilitation sales for SSRCx, will speak at the 2008 Global Construction Summit April 11 in Beijing. Qualk and four additional panelists will participate in a session on the green building movement in the Middle East.

EMCOR Group, Norwalk, Conn., acquired Mechanical Service of Central Florida, Orlando, Fla. Illingworth Corp ., Milwaukee, a subsidiary of EMCOR Group, received the MSCA Star Contractor award from the Mechanical Services Contractors of America. The award selects firms demonstrating a proven record of accomplishment of excellence, as defined by adhering to the highest level of customer service standards, employing UASTAR certified technicians, maintaining an outstanding safety record, and providing on-going education to employees. Only 8% of 1,200 contractor member firms nationwide have MSCA Star status.

Vision Land Consultants, Golden, Colo., purchased G&H Consulting Engineers, Granby, Colo., which specializes in construction management and civil engineering.

Milone & MacBroom , Cheshire, Conn., acquired transportation planning and traffic engineering firm Barkan & Mess Assocs ., Branford, Conn.

Newcomb & Boyd , Atlanta, announced that Michelle T. Bunn joined the firm as mechanical engineer. Kristina H. Brooks has been named marketing manager for Newcomb & Boyd. Mechanical engineers Lynda B. Herrig and Walker C. Jones received LEED AP status .

On Earth Day, April 22, more than 2,500 HOK , St. Louis, employees on four continents will “Go Barefoot” by taking a tangible step toward reducing their carbon footprint by altering their transportation and work habits. The event supports HOK’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions from its projects and practice by 50% by 2010. The changes may range from taking public transportation, biking to work, eliminating paper usage, and reducing the use of disposable packaging.

The Albert Kahn Family of Companies , Detroit, announced that Michael Durand, PE, LEED AP, has been named principal. Durand has 13 years of experience in the automotive, industrial, and healthcare industries. Durand’s recent project portfolio includes work for Henry Ford Health System’s Macomb Hospital, Chesterfield, Mich., and West Bloomfield Hospital, West Bloomfield, Mich.

Syska Hennessy Group , New York City, named James Coe, PE , Christopher Johnston, PE , and Carol Fern, PE , to the positions of senior vice presidents. Based in Atlanta, Coe joined Syska Hennessy in 2006, where his 20 years of experience in engineering operations, project management, and design led to the growth of Southeast Region Critical Facilities Group. Coe is a licensed professional in 35 states. Johnston, based in Atlanta, has 37 years of professional experience in his position as chief engineer for Syska Hennessy’s National Critical Facilities team. Johnston is a licensed professional in four states. Fern, based in the Los Angeles office, worked in Syska Hennessy’s Healthcare Market Focus group since 2004 and she is responsible for managing the national healthcare team in the western United States.
