Also in the blogs, CSE ‘s “Field Guide for Engineers” blogger, David Sellers, PE, posted a series of discussions about the “two-thirds” rule for locating sensors to control variable flow systems. Sellers wrote that he encountered an operating engineer who pointed out that a differential pressure sensor controlling chilled water distribution pumps was located so that it sensed the pressure across the mains leaving the plant. Sellers had heard that one saves energy by locating the sensor two-thirds of the way between the pumps and the most remote load. He thought that relocating the sensor might offer an opportunity but wasn’t sure why.
