Hydraulic Institute Releases Air Operated Pump And Test Standards

By Consulting Specifying Engineer Staff November 2, 2018

The Hydraulic Institute (HI), Parsippany, N.J., has just added two new standards to its ANSI/HI Pump Standards: the American National Standards for Air Operated Pumps (ANSI/HI 10.1-10.5-2004), and the American National Standards for Air Operated Pump Tests (ANSI/HI 10.6-2004).

Air Operated Pump Standard This new standard is for air operated pumps, including positive displacement reciprocating pumps used for general liquid transfer, which are driven by means of compressed gas (usually air) from an outside source. The pump may be designed with a single diaphragm or double diaphragms connected to a reciprocating shaft in which one side of the diaphragm is in contact with the liquid being pumped, and the other side is in contact with the compressed gas (air). The standard includes the following sections:

• Types, Configurations and Nomenclature
• Definitions
• Design and Application
• Installation, Operation and Maintenance

Air Operated Pump Test Standard This new standard applies to the test of air-operated diaphragm and bellows pumps. It provides uniform procedures for mechanical and other pump performance tests, as well as recording the test results. All tests are based on using water at ambient temperature, unless otherwise noted. The test standard includes the following test types:

• Mechanical testing to demonstrate the mechanical integrity with pump in operation
• Net Positive Suction Head testing
• Suction Lift testing
• Head-Flow-Air Consumption and Mechanical Integrity at speed and flow rate
• Hydrostatic Testing of Pressure-retaining Components
• Noise Measurement in accordance with national or international specification

The widely accepted ANSI/HI Pump Standards include definitions, industry terminology, design, application, and installation and operation and maintenance guidelines. The standards have been designed to help eliminate misunderstandings between the pump manufacturer, purchaser and/or user, and to assist the purchaser in selecting and obtaining the proper product for a specific need.

As with other recent releases, the electronic versions of these standards are protected by user-friendly encryption technology. The encryption program automatically performs the authorization process for the user. HI Standards are encrypted for the installation and use on the computer on which they are downloaded. Multi-user licenses are available for the web-based version.

A Guide and Annual Subscriber service is available for the ANSI/HI Pump Standards, making it possible for users to receive the very latest and most comprehensive pump standards as soon as they are published. The Standards Cross-Reference Guide, along with a free Master Index, assists current standards users in identifying the updates they need. The convenient annual subscription service ensures that users receive all new and revised standards for the current calendar year. Subscribers may choose from the following formats: hardcopy, CD-ROM, or web-based for single or multi-users. Downloadable copies of the free Cross- Reference Guide and Master Index are available at pumps.org .

“HI updates its standards continuously. With this guide and subscriber service, we can bring pump standards users the most current information and updates as soon as they are available. With this service, the new Air Operated Pump Standards and Air Operated Pump Test Standards will be automatically sent to annual subscribers,” explained Robert Asdal, Executive Director of HI. “HI Standards are a worthy P3/2004 HI Releases Air Operated Pump and Test Standards investment and this service will ensure, over time that ANSI/HI standards always remain current.”

ANSI/HI Standards can be purchased as a complete set or as individual documents. The current complete set includes 23 standards and a Master Index. An annual subscription for the current year is included with the initial purchase of a complete set and current subscribers will receive these two new standards as part of their subscription. Users with specific needs, however, may prefer to purchase standards as individual documents.

The hardcopy version of the complete set of standards is organized in five sturdy, three-ring binders. The CD-ROM format, ideal for single users, includes an electronic index with built-in hypertext navigation, to locate any topic instantly. The web-based version provides company-wide access to the complete set of up-to-date standards for one or more simultaneous users, 24 hours a day, from anywhere in the world. The documents can be accessed from the web or downloaded as PDFs for short-term, off-line use locally.

Individual documents are available in separately bound hardcopy, as a PDF download with an electronic index for easy navigation, or via the web for individuals or multi-users. The binders, hard copies, CD-ROM’s, PDFs, and Subscription Services are available through HI’s e-Store at pumps.org . Orders also can be faxed to (973) 267-9055 using the order form found at the e-Store.
