H&A’s Smith attains BEMP certification

Stephen Smith, building science manager at H&A Architects & Engineers, has attained ASHRAE’s Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) certification.
Smith demonstrates the ability to evaluate, choose, use, calibrate, and interpret the results of energy modeling software, as well as confirm his competence to model new and existing buildings and systems.
Smith leads H&A’s new Building Sciences Studio, a dedicated core group providing services to help clients meet federal energy mandates in creative and low-cost ways. The Building Sciences Studio core capabilities and services include: advanced energy simulations; daylighting simulation; computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling; advanced electrical analysis; envelope optimization and condensation studies; and net-zero design.
The ASHRAE Building Energy Modeling Professional certification program was developed in collaboration with the U.S. affiliate of the International Building Performance Simulation Assn. (IBPSA-USA) and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA). The first exam for the new certification program was administered in January 2010.
“Energy modeling is one of the most effective ways to achieve energy efficiency when designing sustainable buildings,” Gordon Holness, ASHRAE president, said. “Since buildings consume 40% of all U.S. primary energy supplies, and energy modeling is only as good as the consultant who uses it, ASHRAE’s newest certification program strives to ensure that engineers and architects achieve the highest possible standards when it comes to sustainable design.”
