Going green on the road
Two leaders in the hotel industry have announced new LEED buildings.
U.S. Green Building Council LEED certification has reached data centers , schools , and restaurants . Now it is moving into the hotel industry.
Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group and Hilton Hotels Corp. have announced the opening a LEED registered hotel and LEED Gold certified headquarters, respectively. The buildings, according to Environmental Leader , include energy-efficient features such as water conservation programs.
Kimpton’s building, the Hotel Palomar Philadelphia, will feature energy-efficient mechanical systems, low-flow fixtures, a water filtration system to eliminate on-property use of bottled water, and in-room recycling containers. The upgrades to the hotel, which was originally constructed in 1929, also include using recycled materials for new floor tiles and the ceiling.
Peggy Trott, general manager at the hotel, said the Kimpton is going for a LEED silver rating, and an official announcement should be made 60 to 90 days after re-opening on Oct. 14.
Hilton’s McLean,Va.-based global headquarters are aiming for a LEED gold label. The 11-story, 323,000 sq ft facility includes a reflective roof, low-flow plumbing that reduces water use by 40%, energy-efficient windows, sustainable wood in doors and lobby millwork, and a 10,000-gal cistern for rainwater and air conditioner condensate capture.
