Global Wind Day creates awareness in alternative energy
The GWEC’s main objective of the day is to convince political leaders worldwide that wind power is a viable energy source, and that countries can lower their power costs while simultaneously helping the environment. According to the Council, using wind energy can save over 10 billion tons of C02 while providing up to 12% of the world’s power by 2020.
In April, President Barack Obama endorsed a bill that would supply nearly $150 billion in spending over the next 10 years on renewable energy in the United States. That money would go towards construction of products such as wind turbines and solar panels, though the plan is still awaiting Congressional approval.
Global Wind Day, which is being recognized worldwide in 30 countries, is a descendant of European Wind Day, which was celebrated in 2007 and 2008
