GE Power Systems has finalized its purchase of Enron Wind Corp.’s wind-turbine business. GE managers say the purchase of the newly named GE Wind Energy provides the opportunity for synergies with a number of other GE businesses, including plastics, transportation and power controls.

The acquisition includes a range of engineering and site-design services, along with the Enron line of wind-turbine generators, with outputs ranging from 750 kW to 1.5 MW. Generators with outputs up to 3.6 MW are now under development. Enron, however, will retain control of existing wind-farm assets.

GE estimates that the worldwide wind energy sector will grow by approximately 20% per year, with biggest growth in Europe, the U.S. and Latin America.
