Fire Protection on the International Scene

By Consulting Specifying Engineer Staff December 30, 2004

The markets for fire protection are growing worldwide at a rapid pace. But nowhere else is the growth rate as fast as it is in China, where it is expected to move ahead at 6% to 15% per year depending on the market segment, according to the Helmut Kaiser Consultancy.

Researchers also point out that the market increase worldwide is driven by greater damage to assets, more fire events around the world and climate change—but also by new technologies and companies. Moreover, the market is global for key technologies and local for most of the service and installations.

In other international news, a groundbreaking agreement signed in October between the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the National Technical Committee for Fire Protection Standardization, a committee of the Fire Department, Ministry of Public Security in China. Twenty-six NFPA codes and standards will be translated into Chinese and used in the coming months.

The licensing agreement was signed in Beijing by James M. Shannon, NFPA president, and Major General Guo of the Ministry of Public Security in China. The Fire Department will translate the codes, and NFPA will follow-up with significant training. The translation and use of these NFPA codes and standards will guide Chinese authorities as they ready Olympic sites for the 2008 Games in Beijing.

“We are pleased to work with the Ministry of Public Security and General Guo in translating NFPA’s key codes,” said Shannon. “The availability of our codes and standards in China will enhance fire and life safety for residents and visitors, and we are confident that these enhancements to safety in China will have a lasting impact beyond the Olympics.”
