On Jan. 4, 2010, the Dept. of Energy (DOE) published a notice of proposed rule (NOPR) proposing to adopt test procedures for measuring the energy consumption of walk-in coolers and freezers. Specifically, DOE is proposing a test procedure that contains two separate test methods: One that determines the energy consumption of the refrigeration system of the walk-in cooler or freezer and references Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) standard 1250 Performance Rating of Walk-in Coolers and Freezers, and the other that determines the energy consumption of the envelope. DOE has scheduled a public hearing for Feb. 11, 2010, and will accept written comments until March 22, 2010.
