The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), Alexandria, Va., released the new SectionFormat/PageFormat, a joint publication with Construction Specifications Canada. The document, which is the first to combine the two formatting standards into one publication, provides a uniform approach to organizing and presenting specification sections.
The SectionFormat provides a uniform standard for arranging specification text in a project manual’s section by using a three-part format. PageFormat offers a recommended arrangement of text on a specification page within a project manual, by providing a framework for consistently formatting and designating articles, paragraphs, and sub-paragraphs.
CSI and CSC conducted an industry-wide review process while updating the document to ensure that the standards keep pace with changes to MasterFormat, the Project Resource Manual, and Omni Class Construction Classification System. The updates reflect changes in the industry related to advancement in formation technology and electronic publishing.
The major changes to SectionFormat include coordination and alignment of article and heading titles with MasterFormat 2004 Edition and the Project Resource Manual, revisions to commentary that explain the use of titles, and updates to cross-references to match MasterFormat 2004 edition. The major changes to PageFormat included a focus on making documents easier to read without limiting specific technology or processing methods, freedom to use publishing and electronic media techniques on a wide variety of display devices, and a substantial reduction of variations between CSI and CSC formats.
