Construction rises in D.C.
Commercial construction in Washington, D.C., was on the rise in 2008, accounting for more than $6 billion in new projects.
President Barack Obama was not the only one bringing change to Washington, D.C., in 2008; commercial construction companies also were providing a makeover to the nation’s capitol.
According to the Washington Business Journal , 402 commercial construction projects took place in the District of Columbia in 2008, accounting for over 37 million sq ft of space. The projects cost a total of $6.3 billion, a 14% increase from 2007.
The biggest contributor to the new construction was the Washington Metro, which supplied 36% of the 2008 construction. Nearly half of the projects built by the Metro are mixed-use developments, a growing trend in the area. In total, mixed-use developments accounted for 20% of the region’s new commercial construction, adding 7.3 million sq ft of new space.
