Chicago-based Commonwealth Edison Co . (ComEd) has teamed up with General Electric (GE) and Silver Spring Networks to work on the development of a pilot smart meter. The meter’s main goal will be to monitor energy use inside buildings and inform users when peak energy use takes place.
Currently under review by the Illinois Commerce Commission, the pilot meter project involves 141,000 smart meters manufactured by GE. It is also equipped with Silver Spring’s communications technology, helping the meter detect power outages while at the same time help utilities avoid manual readings.
ComEd said it hopes the project will eventually lead to a smart grid infrastructure, with the meter being used as a guide for which services to include. The company has around 3.8 million customers in the Chicagoland area.
