The Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) recently issued a report for CertainTeed Corp.’s MemBrain Smart Vapor Retarder. The report, which provides impartial and technical comment on pioneering products, broadens the resources available to Canadian building professionals tasked with creating environmentally sound and sustainable buildings. The CCMC report approves the patented nylon film for use as a vapor and air barrier system within the exterior walls of the building envelope and is in compliance with the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) 2005.MemBrain has been”We are excited to offer advanced, dynamic moisture-management technology to the Canadian marketplace,” says Stan Gatland, Manager of Building Science Technology for CertainTeed. “MemBrain is used in place of traditional polyethylene vapor retarders with unfaced fiber glass insulation to provide an insulation system that’s ideal for areas with extreme seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, such as the Canadian provinces.”To meet the criteria of the CCMC Technical Guide for MasterFormat number 07272, a conforming air barrier system must have an acceptable low air leakage rate, be continuous and durable, have sufficient strength to resist the anticipated air pressure load and be buildable in the field.MemBrain is a patented vapor retarder that changes its molecular permeability under varying humidity conditions to allow wall cavities to stay dry and help reduce the risk of damaging mold and mildew.
