California Adopts IAPMO Codes; IAPMO Releases 2006 Version of Two Codes
The state of California plans to adopt the International Association of Plumbing
and Mechanical Officials’ (IAPMO) 2006 Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) and 2006 Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC). Government subcommittees are currently drafting state-specific amendments to the codes and preparing to present the recommended changes at forthcoming public hearings. The proposed codes will be identified as the 2007 California Plumbing Code (CPC) and 2007 California Mechanical Code (CMC) and are expected to go into effect January 1, 2008.
Dwight Perkins, IAPMO’s western regional manager, was enthusiastic about the imminent code adoptions. “We are excited that California has continued to utilize our codes and implement them as state standards,” he said. “It is of vital importance to the public health that safe codes are continually updated and enforced.”
Jay Peters, senior director of Codes and Education at IAPMO, emphasized the benefit to those in the plumbing and mechanical industries of getting a head start on learning the codes. “Apprentices and students should study the 2001 California Plumbing Code and 2001 California Mechanical Code in order to get a solid grasp of the fundamentals before the new 2007 codes are implemented,” he said. “Those already versed in the 2001 California Codes should begin transitioning now by becoming familiar with the 2006 UPC and UMC.”
Perkins also noted that several other states in the western region are in various stages of reviewing the 2006 UPC for adoption. Washington, Alaska, Arizona and southern Nevada are each in the process of approving the code, with anticipated effective dates ranging from late 2006 to mid-2007.
