Awards shine a light on LED design excellence
The DOE's Next Generation Luminaires awards salute designers making smart use of energy-efficient commercial lighting luminaires with LEDs.
The U.S. Dept. of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy section announced winners of its inaugural Next Generation Luminaires award program at the Feb. 19 Strategies in Light Conference in Santa Clara, Calif. The competition—sponsored by the DOE, Illuminating Engineering Society of North America , and the International Assn. of Lighting Designers –recognizes excellence in design of energy-efficient commercial lighting luminaires that use light emitting diodes (LEDs).
Announced at Lightfair International back in May 2008, the competition attracted entries from 29 different lighting companies. A panel of judges from the architectural lighting design community evaluated entries based on performance, appearance, construction, and submitted photometric data. Three submitted products were designated Best in Class:
* GE Lighting , Fairfield, Ct.: Immersion jewelry case lighting
* Journee Lighting , Westlake Village, Calif.: AZARA track mounted luminaires
* Winona Lighting , Winona, Minn.: STEP03 indoor/outdoor step lighting.
